With Milano Cortina 2026 now in its final stages, the assessment of the event isn’t only about sporting results, gold medals for Italy, and attendance figures. The Winter Olympics have brought back to the center the digital maturity of organizations and the importance of structured management in highly exposed ecosystems. Themes that won’t melt away like the mountain snow in the coming months and that are bound to leave a mark well beyond the closing ceremony.
During the Olympic weeks, infrastructure, hotels, ticketing systems, and hospitality-related services were the target of intrusion attempts and cyberattacks. Coordinated DDoS campaigns hit institutional portals, booking platforms, and online services, with dozens of targets activated in parallel to saturate systems and cause operational disruption, alongside targeted phishing attempts. At some moments, more than 50 targets were identified with hundreds of coordinated requests, while the digital ecosystem of the Games had to support a network capable of connecting more than 3,000 athletes and around 1 million devices, delivering 116 events across distant and highly heterogeneous territories.
Episodes that confirm how closely cybersecurity is connected to the maturity level of internal processes, and how it can prove decisive in the ecosystems of a major international event as well as in the everyday operational management of organizations.
Digital maturity starts with process management
Bringing this reflection into the world of Service Management, the example of the Olympics helps us understand that protection is not an additional layer to be applied afterward, but an element that must be integrated into the very architecture of processes. When operational management becomes truly structured and supported by clear visibility into what is happening, the organization reduces its exposure to risks and strengthens its ability to respond.
The experience of the Games shows that digital complexity grows faster than the infrastructure itself and requires management models capable of maintaining control and continuity even under constant pressure. The real difference emerges when maturity in process management makes it possible to turn technology into lasting operational stability over time and leads organizations to equip themselves with the right tools to govern digital evolution.
